First Reading (Isaiah 2:1-5)

Isaiah envisions the exaltation of Jerusalem and its temple, resulting in the nations being attracted to God’s word. The LORD will act as judge between the nations, resulting in an everlasting and universal peace. Israel is then urged to follow the beneficial way of God.

Psalm (Psalm 122)

The Psalmist joyfully anticipates going to the house of the Lord within the walls of Jerusalem. The eternal city is the very centre of divine worship and the place of kingly judgment. The Psalmist ends with an exhortation to pray for its peace.

Second Reading (Romans 13:11-14)

St. Paul reminds the Christians at Rome that, as the night is almost over, they should cast off the works of darkness and live as in the day. That means to live honourably, allowing Jesus to shape their conduct and turning away from the works of the flesh.

Gospel (Matthew 24:36-44)

Jesus likens the suddenness of his second coming to the days of Noah when judgment took away those who were not ready. When he comes, many will also be so taken in the midst of daily routines. We are to be ready for the Son of Man to arrive at any time.

CONNECTION SUGGESTIONS

  • The anticipation of the return of Christ should positively affect the way we live
  • Jesus will be coming as Judge of all the earth
  • God’s ways are always a light unto our path: follow them
  • The ways of the world are dark and destructive: the only truly effective antidote is to walk in the light of the Gospel

First Reading (Jeremiah 33:14-16)

In the last days of Judah, just before the nation went into exile and the line of David removed from the throne, the prophet Jeremiah has a startling word from the Lord. He says that a Day is coming when Judah and Israel will be restored under a righteous Davidic king ruling in justice.

Psalm (25:1-10)

The Psalmist turns to the Lord for protection asking for knowledge of his ways and to be led in his truth. He acknowledges his sin and makes his appeal based only on God’s mercy and love. He is the one who leads humble sinners in his blessed ways as they keep faith with him.

Second Reading (1 Thessalonians 3:9-13)

St. Paul is excited about the possibility of seeing the Thessalonians and asks the Lord to guide his way. He asks for their love for all to increase just as his has for them. And so that they might be blameless when Jesus comes, he prays that their hearts may be strengthened in holiness.

Gospel (Luke 21:25-36)

Jesus talks of fearful signs in the heavens and on the earth before the Son of Man comes in great glory. These things will indicate that the kingdom of God is near. He gives his word on it, urging us to live accordingly and to pray for strength both to escape and to stand before him.

First Reading (Isaiah 64:1-9)

Yahweh having hidden his face, Isaiah pleads for him to act mightily for those who wait for him. Many Israelites have taken Yahweh’s silence as occasion to sin: indeed all have fallen into iniquity. The prophet asks for mercy because they are his people and he is their father.

Psalm (80:1-7, 17-19)

The Psalmist, aware of Yahweh’s displeasure with his people, asks him three times to shine his face upon them that they might be saved. They have suffered greatly but Yahweh remains in their midst and will surely respond to their calls on his name.

Second Reading (1 Corinthians 1:3-9)

St. Paul is thankful for the grace of God given to the Corinthians as evidenced in their speech and knowledge. Indeed, they lack no spiritual gift as they await the coming of the Lord Jesus and are assured of being strengthened to the end, made blameless by the God who is faithful.

Gospel (Mark 13:24-37)

In various ways Jesus encourages his disciples to be ready for his sudden return in great power and glory after a period of earth shaking events. These will occur within a generation and should serve to keep everyone alert, given that his words are more solid than the cosmos itself.

CONNECTION SUGGESTIONS

  • The people of God are called to wait expectantly for him in troubled times
  • Faithfulness in a time of waiting
  • Faithfulness in the silence of God
  • Waiting is difficult and dangerous
  • When God finally acts it will be decisive and unmistakable
