Based on the Readings as Set

First Reading (Exodus 3:1-15)

The Lord appears to Moses in the burning bush, identifying himself as the God of his ancestors, whose name is “I AM WHO I AM”. He has heard the cry of his people and now he is sending Moses to deliver them and lead them out to the Promised Land.

Psalm (105:1-6, 23-26, 45b)

The Psalmist exhorts his readers to remember the Lord’s mighty acts. Looking to him alone, they are to make his deeds known among the nations. He caused captive Israel to increase greatly and sent Moses and Aaron to deliver them. Praise be to him!

Second Reading (Romans 12:9-21)

Paul exhorts the Christian community to have genuine love for one another and serve the Lord faithfully even under persecution. Instead of taking revenge on their enemies they are to put matters into God’s hands and allow good to overcome evil. 

Gospel (Matthew 16:21-28)

Jesus rebukes Peter for not understanding that suffering and death are ahead for both Messiah and his disciples. We are not to seek to preserve our lives, but to deny ourselves and follow Jesus, knowing that, in the resurrection, he will abundantly reward. 

CONNECTION SUGGESTIONS

  • It is God who saves us, not we ourselves
  • Doing good will ultimately triumph over evil
  • Suffering is to be expected as part of the Christian life
  • Relief from suffering is in God’s hands
  • We are to follow in God’s ways in all circumstances, loving God, fellow Christians and our enemies

Based on the Alternate Readings

First Reading (Jeremiah 15:15-21)

Jeremiah asks the Lord that his persecutors suffer retribution. He has been faithful but his suffering is worsening, making him question. The Lord, on the other hand, encourages the prophet to rely upon him alone for restoration and deliverance.

Psalm (26:1-8)

Faithful in his walk, the Psalmist expects vindication from the Lord. He even challenges the Lord to test him in his innocence. He has not kept company with sinners, but has joined the procession to the altar in the Temple he loves because God dwells there.

First Reading (Acts 2:42-47)

The early church, newly endowed with the Holy Spirit, is radically committed to the apostles’ teaching and to a joyful common life both at home and at the temple. The apostles perform awe-inspiring miracles and many are drawn to join the new group.

Psalm (23)

The Psalmist sees the Lord as the good shepherd who looks after his flock, abundantly providing for them even in difficult circumstances. Goodness and mercy characterize a life lived in his fold.

Second Reading (1 Peter 2:19-25)

Peter points Christians who suffer unjustly to the example of Jesus, their true shepherd. He suffered greatly although innocent, patiently content to trust in God while bearing their sins and freeing them to follow the paths of righteousness.

Gospel (John 10:1-10)

Jesus refers to himself as both the door of the sheepfold and the shepherd whose voice the sheep know. They enter by him and are saved and pastured by him alone. Under his care the sheep enjoy abundant life. Other shepherds are pretenders to be avoided.

  • Human beings need caring for in a dangerous world
  • Jesus applies to himself the Old Testament roles of the Lord God

First Reading (Isaiah 50:4-9a)

Isaiah envisions the Lord’s obedient Servant under assault: enduring insults, spitting and striking. He is determined not to flinch or waver from his conviction that the Lord is his help and vindication. In such light his adversaries fade into insignificance.

Psalm (31:9-16)

Under serious affliction from all those around him, the Psalmist is driven to tears, misery and extreme physical weakness. In spite of these attacks in which even his life is in danger, he remains confident that the Lord will deliver him.

Second Reading (Philippians 2:5-11)

St. Paul encourages the Philippians to be like Jesus who, although divine, humbled himself and endured a demeaning death. In the end, he was exalted by God to be Lord over all, with every knee in heaven and earth bowing before him.

Gospel (Matthew 26:14-27:66)

Matthew’s account of Jesus’ last hours, from the Last Supper through to his death, is marked by a strong sense of fulfilling God’s plan. Jesus finally submits to his destiny willingly, refusing to exercise his power as the Son of God. His innocence sharply contrasts the malice of his foes.

Alternative Gospel (Mathew 27:11-54)

Matthew’s account of Jesus’ Passion, from the trial before Pilate through to his death highlights the tension and misunderstanding over his being “King of the Jews”. The jealousy of his foes and Pilate’s weakness form a stark contrast with the centurion’s recognizing him as God’s Son.

 

CONNECTION SUGGESTIONS

  • Divine vindication of the innocent may take an unexpected form
  • The servant of God is to be humbly obedient, leaving any vindication or exaltation in the hands of the Lord.
  • Obedience to God can lead to insults and even persecutions and death
  • Jesus proves himself to be the Suffering Servant of Israel’s expectations

SCRIPTURE SENTENCE (BAS, Canada)

Christ became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name. Philippians 2.8–9

Isaiah tells of the coming Servant of the Lord who will undergo humiliation, rejection and great injustice. Like a sacrificial lamb he will silently bear the sins of many and make them whole. Assigned to the grave, in the end he will be vindicated and exalted in triumph.

Psalm (22)

Encircled by enemies like raging beasts, the Psalmist despairs in God’s seeming absence. Melting with fear as lots are cast for his clothes, he still trusts that he will be delivered so mightily that the nations, the dead, and posterity itself will come to serve the Lord.

Second Reading (Hebrews 10:16-25)

The writer of Hebrews describes Jesus as both priest and sacrificial victim who made a way for us to come to God with clean hearts. As a result, we should continue to meet together in mutual encouragement towards love and good deeds.

Gospel (John 18:1-19:42)

Quoting both Jesus himself and Scripture, John stresses how God is in control of Jesus’ trials and crucifixion. Pilate, knowing Jesus innocent, gives in to the raging crowd and he is crucified. Soldiers cast lots for his tunic while Jesus gives up his life and is buried.

CONNECTION SUGGESTIONS

  • Suffering and troubles do not signify the absence of God
  • As high priest Jesus offers himself, both priest and victim.
  • The profound and mysterious love of God for us sinners
  • The cost of our salvation to God and his Son

The Jewish authorities bring the captive Jesus to Pilate, the Roman governor. Finding him innocent, Pilate sends him to Herod but neither finds reason for crucifixion. Finally, Pilate gives in to the crowd and Jesus’ followers have to watch as he gives up his spirit.

CONNECTION SUGGESTIONS

  • Divine vindication of the innocent may take an unexpected form
  • The servant of God is to be obedient, confident in divine vindication
  • Our task is to remain humble, leaving any exaltation to the Lord

First Reading (Job 23:1-9, 16-17)

Job complains that God’s hand is heavy upon him and he dares to enter the dwelling of the Almighty to get his answer. Even though God is elusive even there, Job’s innocence makes him bold even though he feels he would rather hide in his terror.

Psalm (22:1-15)

Encircled by enemies like raging beasts, the Psalmist cries out at in God’s seeming absence. His ancestors were saved, but he is but a despised worm. Although tempted to give up hope, he remembers that he has always successfully depended on the Lord.

Second Reading (Hebrews 4:12-16)

God’s Word is living and very sharp, penetrating into our hearts but Jesus is our great and sympathetic high priest from heaven. Like us, he has been fully tested but without sin. We can therefore boldly approach God through him for mercy and grace.

Gospel (Mark 10:17-31)

A rich man declines to give away all he possesses to follow Jesus and gain eternal life. Jesus points out how hard it is for the wealthy to enter the kingdom but with God anything is possible. Those who have given up much to follow Jesus shall be rewarded.

CONNECTION SUGGESTIONS

  • We can boldly approach our God
  • The divide between God and man is bridged by the God/man Jesus.
  • Possessions in this life may or may not be a sign of God’s blessing

The prophet Amos threatens rich people who trample the poor and refuse to listen to reproof. They shall suffer devastation and never enjoy the fancy things that they own. Be sure that the Lord will only be with those who seek good and not evil.

Psalm (90:12-17)

The Psalmist pleads with the Lord to help his people be wise in the light of time’s fleeting passage. Long afflicted, they desperately need the Lord to turn back to them. They yearn for a time of blessing that makes their troubles fade in comparison.
